City of Sheffield gave a splendid performance in the under 17 race at the Northern Cross Country Championships at Knowsley.
They were runners up missing out on gold medals to Cheshire club Vale Royal by just two points. Sheffield were given a good start through Josh Naisbitt who finished seventh. James Gormley (9th) and Jonathon Shields (11th) were not far behind. With three runners in, they were 10 points behind Vale Royal. The fourth Sheffield runner Aaron Thorpe, made a valiant effort finishing 60th and pulled back eight points on his opposite number, almost, but not quite, enough for victory.
City were also medallists in the under 15 boys race, finishing third. Alfie Manthorpe gave them a fine start finishing fifth with Oliver Dane, 17th, Julian Slater, 32nd, and Matthew Shaw, 87th. In this race Hallamshire’s Cameron Bell excelled finishing third. An even better performance came from another Hallamshire runner, Tilly Simpson who was runner up in the under-13 girls race with Ana Garcia (City of Sheffield) running well for ninth. Led by Mya Taylor, 21st, Rotherham came close to team medals finishing fourth.
There was little success for South Yorkshire runners in the men’s race, Matt Hobbs being the leading runner from the area in 50th place, but the women fared better. In a race won by Holmfirth’s Katie Walshaw, Nicola Squires had an excellent run in ninth place. Rotherham had Sam Johnson, 11th with two Hallamshire runners Julia Jagger, 12th and Xanthe Wray 16th. Hallamshire looked good prospects for team medals but they had no fourth counter and failed to finish a team.
Rotherham, led by Mary Jenkinson, 17th, finished fourth in the junior women’s race.
