JENNY Blizzard (Rotherham Harriers) defends her Doncaster Town Centre Open 5k women’s race title tonight.
A late entry, Blizzard was in sparkling form earlier in the season prior to picking up an injury.
Doncaster Athletic Club’s Carl Ryde, runner-up to Rotherham’s Phillip Hoole in 2010, will fly the flag for the promoting club in the men’s race. Hoole, fifth last year, will again start as one of the favourites, as will Mick Hill (Tipton). He will be looking to go one better than last year’s second spot.
The meeting, the only one of its kind in the north, gets under way at 7pm with the One Mile Fun Run. That is followed by the Vets’ 5k at 7.30pm and the Open race at 8pm. All races start from the top of Hallgate.
Race organiser Mark Hudson told The Star yesterday that entries for all three races are currently on par with the 2011 meeting, but that it would need a sizeable number of late entries to match last year’s overall figures.
“We are just keeping our fingers crossed that the rain, which resulted in the race at Brodsworth being called off earlier in the season, and the Sandall Beat 10k Trail Race suffering a big drop in numbers, holds off tonight,” he said.
