ROTHERHAM Harriers finished sixth in the women’s race at the National Road Relay Championships at Clumber Park on Saturday, their best ever position in this event.
Jade Allen finished 14th in a very competitive opening stage clocking 12:21.
The same time by Steph Burns saw her gain six places on the second stage with Annabelle Grady (12:28) holding eighth place for Rotherham on stage three.
A fine run by Jenny Blizard (12:09), the fastest of the Rotherham quartet, gained another two place. To emphasise their depth, Rotherham placed their B team 11th, ahead of all the other Yorkshire teams.
Particularly impressive for Rotherham’s B team were Jessica Fawcett and Laura Spence who both ran 12:28 on the first two stages.
A solid performance from Hallamshire gave them 12th place with Calli Thackery (12:30) their fastest runner of the final stage.
The race was won by Aldershot who overhauled Birchfield on the last leg.
In the men’s race, won by Newham and Essex Beagles, Hallamshire were 23rd.
The Clumber Park course, a hastily arranged replacement for the unavailable Sutton Park, proved to be an excellent venue.
