Several South Yorkshire athletes are medal contenders at the English Junior Indoor Championships at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport this weekend.
Adam Hague (Dearne ALC), the 2013 under 17 pole vault winner, moves up to the under 20 age group.
The vault is one of the strongest fields of the meeting and includes Hague’s Dearne teammate Nicolas Cole.
Another contender at under 20 level is Doncaster’s Aiden Davies in the 400 metres.
All rounder Davies is also listed for the 60 metres hurdles and long jump. City of Sheffield’s Josh Filleul will also compete in the 400 and hurdles.
Bronze medallists at under 17 level last year, Kristie Edwards (City of Sheffield) moves up to the under 20 section where she has entered both sprints with Barnsley’s Lauren Frid listed for the 60 metres. Abigail Roberts (Dearne ALC) should do well in the pole vault.
In the men’s under 17 age group, Joe McGrath (Doncaster in the 60 metres, Essa Ahmed (Hallamshire) in the 800 and Matthew Miller (City) of Sheffield) should feature prominently in the long jump.
The under 17 women’s section includes Chesterfield sisters Alicia and Ella Barrett. Alcia is firm favourite to retain her 60 metres hurdles title whilst Ella tacked a 200 and 300 metres double. Toni Buckingham (Barnsley AC) should do well in the shot.
Billie Jo Harris (City of Sheffield) was third in the under 15 60 metres last year and is still in the same age groups where she also runs in the 200 metres.
Another double medal prospect in this section is Emily Tinsley (Dearne ALC) who js highly ranked in both the pole vault and high jump. In the 800 metres, Emily Simpson (City of Sheffield) and Tilly Simpson (Hallamshire) should both do well as should Keelan Wilson (Rotherham) in the boys 800.
The meeting starts at 10:15am today and tomorrow.
