Athletics: Pole vault title joy for Cutts

Have your say

A great performance from Luke Cutts (Dearne ALC) gave him the pole vault title at the UK Championships and Trials at Birmingham over the weekend.

Cutts cleared 5.65. a personal best, the second time in a week he has done the B standard for the World Championships. Crucially, he beat Steve Lewis, fifth in the Olympics, who recorded the same height.

Cutts cleared 5.20, 5.45 and 5.65 at the first attempt which gave him the edge on Lewis. Cutts failed at the A standard of 5.70 which Lewis has cleared indoors and the selectors have the option of picking both men.

Selection would be fully deserved for Cutts who is running into form at just the right time.

Lee Doran (City of Sheffield) won the javelin with a modest 70.77 with team mate Joe Dunderdale taking the bronze with 68.38.

There were silver medals for City of Sheffield athletes Rick Yates in the 400 hurdles (49.49) and Mukhtar Mohammed in the 800 (1:47.86), the latter narrowly failing to catch Michael Rimmer on the line. It was Rimmer’s sixth national title, with Mohammed running out of gas as he approached the line.

As for Yates, he was a mere four hundredths of a second outside the A standard for Moscow

There were bronze medals for Jamie Williamson (City of Sheffield) in the shot (16.19) Lee Emanuel (City of Sheffield) in the 1500 metres (3:52.34) and Sheffield based Louise Bloor (Trafford) in the 200 (23.65).

Heptathlete Karla Drew (City of Sheffield) narrowly missed a medal in the 100 hurdles. After winning her heat, she finished fourth in the final in 13.70.
