Pole vaulters Adam Hague and Abigail Roberts, both from the Dearne ALC club where they are coached by Trevor Fox, were in outstanding form at the English under 23 and under 20 championships at Bedford over the weekend. Both won gold in the under 20 age group.
Hague cleared a superb personal best of 5.30 adding 10 centimetres to his outdoor mark. This ranks 10th amongst UK seniors this year and fifth on the all time under 20 list. Not yet 17, Hague beat arch rival Harry Coppell (Wigan) by 5 centimetres. More important it was a qualifying mark for the Worlds Junior Championships in Eugene, USA, in August. For Roberts, 16, it was a closer call. She won on countback with 3.85, 10 centimetres below her best.
At under 23 level there was a 5000 metres win by Calli Thackery (Hallamshire) just a week after she took the Northern senior title. Back from New Mexico where she is studying, Thackery clocked 16:22.64.
Yorkshire and Northern 100 metres champion Ransford Anthony (Doncaster) just missed out on a medal in the under 23 sprint finishing a close fourth in a personal best time of 10.56 whilst City of Sheffield’s Kristie Edwards was fifth in both the 100 (11.74) and 200 (24.24). Such was the standard that Edwards’ times were both personal bests although the 100 was wind assisted.
