Athletics: City of Sheffield and Dearne have to settle for sixth spot

A badly weakened team saw City of Sheffield and Dearne finished sixth in the final match of the British League (Premier Division) at Hendon on Saturday.

This gave them fourth place in the final league table.

In truth, there was little to play for. Birchfield, out in front, duly retained their title whilst Sale and Windsor were already doomed to relegation.

Even so, Sheffield wanted to equal last season’s performance when they finished second.

They only had one A string winner, Jack Houghton in the 400 hurdles. Runner up in the English Championships the previous weekend, Houghton produced a strong finish to win in 50.98.

In Division 1 of the Northern League at Blackburn, Wakefield won the match to clinch the title for the fourth successive year. City of Sheffield trailed home last but finish the season in fourth place. The best Sheffield performance came from Jamie Williamson who won the shot (15.60) and discus (48.15)

Rotherham finished second in Division 2EC at Lincoln but finished up well clear at the top of the division earning a place in the promotion playoff.
