Decathlete John Lane (City of Sheffield) was in good early season form in an open meeting at Wakefield, winning the 100 metres in 10.78 and beating his team mate Ben Shields by just one hundredth of a second.

Lane went on to win the discus with a throw of 42.38. It was a fine start to the outdoor season for Lane who equalled his best time in the sprint and set a new personal best in the discus.

Heptathlete Karla Drew (CSheffield), who is concentrating on the 100 hurdles this year, won that event in 12.34.

Rotherham’s women’s team did well to finish sixth in the National six stage road relay championship at Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield.

Sam Johnson gave them a good start with fourth place on the first stage.

With a time of 14:41 she was the fastest of the Rotherham runners. Laura Spence (15:06) maintained fourth place before Steph Burns (15:32) took them into third place. Robyn Lanceley (15:35) and Annabelle Grady (15:54) maintained the bronze medal spot . A courageous last stage by Jess Fawcett (16:27) saw them slip out of the medals which went to Aldershot, Swansea and Bristol.
