JAMES Toseland endured an anniversary to forget as his 199th and 200th World Superbikes races ended in disappointment at Germany’s Nurburgring.
Almost four years after the Kiverton rider clinched his second World Superbikes Championship title at Magny-Cours, he could only manage an underwhelming 13th place finish in race one before spectacularly crashing out on his second outing.
In truth the 30-year-old was always up against it in round 10 as he lined up on the back-row of the Nurburgring’s grid on the comeback trail from a career-threatening wrist injury suffered in Aragon, Spain three months ago.
And there was no fairytale ending as the BMW Motorrad Italia rider rolled home barely unnoticed in 13th place as the paddock’s new golden boy and runaway Championship leader Carlos Checa dazzled the German circuit by clocking his 11th win from 20 races this season in race one.
Things then went from bad-to-worse in race two as Toseland suffered a high-side fall on lap eight in race two, narrowly escaping serious injury.
