England No 1 Paul Drinkhall and England No 4 Darius ‘Daz’ Knight advanced into the second round of the Under-21 Men’s Singles at the 66th English Open Table Tennis Championships in Sheffield.
But there was disappointment for Chesterfield’s Liam Pitchford and Sam Walker (Worksop) who went out.
Drinkhall defeated Guernsey’s top player, the stylish left-hander Garry Dodd, having lost the first end 11-9 and trailed 7-4 in the second. The Rotherham-based 20-year old ran out a 9-11, 11-7, 11-1, 11-1 winner. Knight gave an all-action performance against Diogo Carvalho (Portugal).
Knight was an impressive winner 11-7, 11-6, 11-4.
Vulcan’s Sam Walker did well against top seed Jung Young Sik (Korea) before his opponent’s forehand proved unstoppable.
Drinkhall eventually fell 11-4 to Poland’s Patryk Chojnowski in the second round.
