Abby sprints to double triumph
Athletics: Results and reports.
PROMISING youngster Abby Newton is, literally, in a hurry to get to the top.
The Hallamshire Harriers runner finished first in the girls 60m and the U13s 200m at the South Yorkshire Indoor Athletics Series on Sunday.
Westbourne School pupil Abby, aged 12, edged out City of Sheffield athlete Billy-Jo Harris, who came runner-up in both events. The competition was staged at the English Institute of Sport.
The precociously talented Abby trains just once a week with the Harriers but she plans on devoting more time to athletics in the future as her long-term objective is to turn professional, according to her mother Laverne Levick.
Laverne says she is ‘extremely proud’ of her daughter’s achievements to date and says her idol is Sheffield superstar Jessica Ennis.
Laverne told The Star: “She got Jess’s autograph about two years ago so she is a big fan. Jess has got a good personality and is a fantastic role model. She is a really down to earth, hard working person and Abby would love to follow in her footsteps one day.”
As she gets taller and stronger, Abby, of Aughton, is set to step up her training regime. She is expected to compete in the Yorkshire and Humberside Athletics Championships in May.
