40,000-plus capacity for Bramall Lane if expansion plans get green light

SHEFFIELD United have lodged plans to redevelop Bramall Lane.

The submission to Sheffield Council follows an 18-month consultation exercise involving the community, supporters and planners after proposals to develop the stadium were initially unveiled in 2007.

Phase one includes the extension of the Frasers Property Kop which could increase the ground's capacity to almost 37,000.

If United receive the green light to proceed, the project will also include the removal of columns from the Kop, a new undercover concourse with modern kiosks and toilet facilities, new executive boxes and disabled facilities in the Evolution Corner Stand, a media/business centre between the Valad Stand and Kop and additional community amenities.

A student residential block will be built on the corner of Shoreham Street and John Street.

United chief executive Jason Rockett, said: "We have been working on the masterplan for more than three years in order to provide a comprehensive medium to long-term strategy for the expansion of the stadium and to continue to grow off-field revenue streams.

"Given the complexity of any stadium development, it is important to be well prepared in order to be able to adapt to changing circumstances and not stagnate as a business.

"Any proposals obviously depend on success on the pitch which remains the club's key focus.

A further application for phase two of the development is expected in the near future.

It is understood this will include the extension of the Valad Stand and development of the car-park, taking the potential capacity to above 40,000.

- Meanwhile, Danny Webber will continue to undergo treatment for a hamstring problem ahead of Sunday's visit to Cardiff City.

The striker missed last weekend's dramatic 4-2 win over Derby County after being diagnosed with the injury but could return to Kevin Blackwell's squad at Ninian Park.

Irrespective of Webber's condition, Jamie Ward, his replacament against Nigel Clough's side, will hope to continue in attack before reporting for international duty with Northern Ireland.

Nick Montgomery, another recent absentee from United's training complex, should feature in some capacity after recovering from the stomach bug which swept through Shirecliffe 24 hours before Derby's arrival.

Although Blackwell is unlikely to make many, if any, changes against opponents who have proved particularly effective on home soil this term, the United manager is continuing to monitor the loan market ahead of the forthcoming deadline for new signings.
