The ultimate guide to buying lingerie

Advertorial Feature

Even the most well-intentioned boyfriend or husband can be lacking the skills needed to buy you lovely lingerie, as the rest of the nation’s women may be lamenting at this very moment! Fact: Sexy undergarments do not need to make you look like an adult model. But even though Valentine’s Day has passed - along with its often mixed gift blessings - there are incalculable advantages in taking charge of your own underwear purchases.

Don’t settle for average underwear

There is nothing like finding one-off undergarments to make you feel like a million dollars; but if you think lingerie purchases are confined to special occasions, think again. Start as you mean to go on. If you dress to impress from the first layer of clothing, you will have much more confidence by the time you get to the outer layers! This does not mean every piece of lingerie you ever wear has to make your granny blush, rather that it needs to be well-made and to work with your body, not against you. Function and form are key.

It’s all about the fit

Around 80% of the UK’s women are wearing the wrong bra size, a fact that is almost comical. The first step for anyone who wants to look good in a bra is to go and get measured. Don’t be shy - once you know your cup size, you can work out what the best style of bra is for you. As a rule, balcony, push-up and plunge bras give cleavage and are ideal for tops or dresses where you want to show yourself off. Padded bras create the illusion of bigger breasts and full cups cover the whole breast and are very supportive. Remember too that sizes can fluctuate between manufacturers, but bras should offer enough comfort and support when done up on the first hooks.

Think outside the box

Lingerie is not just about bras and knickers. Even if you are rarely adventurous in this area, keep in mind there are plenty of figure-fixing undergarments around that are well worth the extra expense. If you want a streamlined silhouette, then investing in some contour-controlling shapewear might be in order. There are plenty of waist accentuating ‘bodies’ and knickers on the market, as well as gorgeous basques or body stockings to go all out sex kitten in.
