DONCASTER Phoenix are hoping it will be a case of third time lucky in Saturday's National Junior Vase final against Castleford at Twickenham.
"We lost against them in both Yorkshire League Three games - though they were narrow defeats," said coach Dave Senior.

"We know that they aren't a bad side who will be playing in League Two next season.

"They have a big strong pack, which is quite good at set-pieces, and they have also one or two tidy backs as well.

"There is an arrogance about them and they fancy themselves a bit and a lot of our lads are quite keen to put one over on them.

"If you were to judge the game on league form you would have to say that they were the slight favourites, but I think the form-book goes out of the window on occasions like Saturday.

"Apart from centre Martin Laycock, who has been struggling with a back injury in recent weeks, everyone is fit and we'll have a stronger squad out than has been the case for much of the season.

"It is certainly stronger than when we played Castleford in our two league games. Castleford have a big pack but we feel that our's is more mobile and if we can mix the play up a bit, then I feel we will give ourselves every chance.

"We've adapted our game a little bit to take account of the width of the Twickenham pitch.

"We had a run through things on Saturday and we also had a session last night. Everyone is focused and they all know what we will be trying to do.

"There is a tremendous team spirit in the camp and the players can't wait to run out on to the Twickenham pitch."

Senior, who has guided Phoenix to the final in his first season in charge, knows what it is like to play at arguably the most famous rugby stadium in the game.

The former back-row forward played for Doncaster (now known as Doncaster Knights) against Thanet in the National Intermediate Trophy final in 1997.

Skipper Mark Longworth, now plying his trade in the second-row, also played in the defeated Doncaster side.

The oldest member of the team, Longworth is still an inspirational figure in the Phoenix ranks and Senior will be looking for a big game from him.
