STRIKER Mark McCammon has become the third Doncaster Rovers star to quit the club since helping them clinch promotion in May.
Instead of plying his trade again in the Championship with newly-promoted Rovers, the 29-year-old will be playing for relegated Gillingham in League Two.

McCammon, who has been on World Cup duty with Barbados in recent weeks, was unhappy at only being offered a one-year deal, as was fellow striker Jason Price.

But whereas 31-year-old Price eventually accepted Rovers offer, McCammon was persuaded to drop down two divisions by the offer of a three-year contract.

Former manager Dave Penney's last signing during his spell in charge, McCammon scored the first ever goal at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Big Mac, as he was known by fans, was never a prolific scorer in his two years at the club.

But his size and athleticism, posed problems for defenders and helped create space for team-mates.

"I first spoke to Mark eight weeks ago so it has been a long wait," said Gills boss Mark Stimpson yesterday.

He added: "When someone of his calibre becomes available, you have to act quickly, but there were several clubs chasing his signature.

"Fair play to Mark, he stuck to his word and I am delighted to have signed him on a three-year deal."

Simpson is confident that McCammon, who impressed him playing for Rovers last season, will help boost the Gills' firepower.

"Mark is a big target man and that is exactly what we were lacking last season."
