DONCASTER Rovers' hopes of making an impact on The Championship were boosted today after they signed talented Dutch defender Jos van Nieuwstadt on a two year contract.
The cultured 29-year-old has signed a permanent deal with Rovers after playing for Sean O'Driscoll's side in pre-season friendlies against Newcastle and Port Vale.
The player impressed in both games with his strength and passing range.
Van Nieuwstadt started his career as a youngster with Willem II, progressing through the ranks before moving to Excelsior Rotterdam where he has played for the past two years.
"I came here last week and the first impression I got was very good. I played a game here and the atmosphere here was brilliant, so I was delighted to sign here.
"I'm not a kick-and-rush kind of guy; I like to play clean football, so I think I have come to the right place.
"The lads are good, nice guys who work very hard and have confidence in the fact that we are going to have a good season."
Sean O'Driscoll, Rovers boss, O'Driscoll said that if the club did not sign Matt Mills, he would have looked at "three or four centre-halves to give us options."
