A SINGLE mum who overcame personal problems to sit exams has been presented with a national award to help her continue her studies.
Marie Malik, aged 20, left home at 16 and gave birth to son Callum, when she was 18, but managed to continue studying for her A Levels.

Now Marie, of East Dene, Rotherham, who has also suffered from mental health problems, is planning to go to She
ffield Hallam University to study a degree in 'Early Years' so she can become a nursery nurse.

The Thomas Rotherham College student was one of 12 in the UK to be chosen for a bursary by the Helena Kennedy Foundation.

She has been given £1,500 to help pay for university.

The foundation gives out bursaries to disadvantaged students who have shown 'resilience and determination' in pursuing their studies.
