A PIONEERING shake-up of Rotherham Hospital's X-ray department is being hailed a success after speeding up the treatment of seriously injured patients.
Two years ago hospital bosses decided to install a new electronic system of capturing medical images such as X-rays, ultrasound and MRI scans - storing them in a similar way to a digital camera.
The hospital says the new Picture Archiving and Comm
unication System has made a big impact on services - particularly for serious trauma patients.Hospital PACS Project Manager Mark Buckley said: "The system means that a number of clinicians can look at the same image at the same time, in different locations.
"This can save a great deal of time in diagnosis of conditions or trauma injuries which can then lead to faster appropriate treatment for the patient.
"If a patient comes in with a head injury we can be consulting with a specialist neurosurgeon, in another location, within minutes of the patient leaving a scanning room."
The database of images is accessible by clinicians, 24 hours a day 365 days a year, from any secure PC able to link to the NHS network.
