SOUTH Yorkshire has been handed a half million pound "reward" after transport chiefs cut congestion.
The windfall will be ploughed into further congestion-busting schemes.
Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly yesterday said that the South Yorkshire Transport Authority will receive £401,000 this year and £160,500 next year after doing "significantly bet
ter than expected".
Journey times on a series of key routes in the region have fallen by three per cent, compared to 2003/04 and 2004/05.
This was despite predictions that journey times would jump by 7.6 per cent.
The government expects the cash to be spent on measures to ease traffic jams at congestion hotspots.
Ministers have stressed that "small measures can make a significant difference" and have drawn attention to new bus lanes in Doncaster which have "already resulted in faster and more reliable journey times".
