SOUTH Yorkshire's budding athletes are being given the chance to show off their talents to two top Olympic stars.
Linford Christie and Darren Campbell will help organise fitness sessions when the Street Athletics 2008 team visit Thurnscoe on Sunday.
The team is coming at the invitation of the Coalfield Regeneration Trust's Sports Legacy project.
The projec
t, set up in April 2007, aims to make fitness sessions for young people living in coalfield communities more accessible, affordable and fun.
Since it started, more than 1,200 young people have taken part in activities, and 76 new volunteer coaches have received training.
Hundreds of young people have been attending Sports Legacy sessions across South Yorkshire and around 350 are expected to attend the Street Athletics event in Thurnscoe.
The young athletes will take part in a series of 60m sprint races and winners will qualify for the final in Manchester on September 19. The winners and runners-up in each category of the national final will win a one year kit contract with Reebok.
Sports Legacy Development Manager Steve Holmes said: "This is a tremendous opportunity for the young people in this area to demonstrate their passion and ability in front of two of the world's most inspirational athletes."
There will also be a music and dance competition with Britain's Got Talent finalists Kombat Breakers offering tips to all the local acts taking part. Once again, the winners will qualify for the national final. The event gets underway at Merrill Road, Thurnscoe, from 1am, with races from 2pm to 4pm.
