A LOCAL history campaigner has pledged to stand in front of bulldozers himself to prevent a picturesque South Yorkshire pub from being demolished.
Roy Newman, chairman of Laughton and District Conservation and History Society, is furious that developers have applied to Rotherham Council to knock down The Rising Deer pub in Brampton-on-le-Morthen.
They want to build three two-storey detached
houses in its place.
The pub, on Brampton Road, has closed down and is no longer trading, but conservationists are already opposing the plans, describing Brampton-on-le-Morthen as "the jewel in the crown of Rotherham".
Mr Newman said: "This village is lost in time with lots of period buildings, and The Rising Deer is one of the those buildings."
He described the planning application as "an absolute obscenity".
What do you think? Add your comment below."The pub has been there for hundreds of years. It used to be known to sell beer by the pound," he said. I will stand in front of the bulldozers if necessary before I will let this come down. In this day and age we have got to protect what we have left."
The application is due to be considered by Rotherham councillors in the next few weeks.
