Have your say

It must be one of Sheffield’s most famous venues for lovers of gigs and music.

But the Black Swan, or The Boardwalk, depending on which generation you fall into, has fallen on hard times today.

Known affectionately as the Mucky Duck, the Snig Hill venue was going strong in the 1960s and by 1976 had hosted a gig by The Sex Pistols as well as AC/DC and Genesis.

It was also the venue at which The Clash played their first-ever gig.

Later, it became The Boardwalk and throughout the 1990s and noughties featured scores of local acts.

The most famous of these turned out to be a little-known up and coming band called the Arctic Monkeys.

In fact, the band’s first ever demo was named Beneath The Boardwalk after the venue.

Rising metal stars Bring Me The Horizon also played at The Boardwalk early on.

Sadly, The Boardwalk ran into difficulties and in 2010 the company which owned the venue went into administration and The Boardwalk/Black Swan’s journey came to an end.

Recently, the building was brought back to life as an LGBT nightclub called Fuel, but that has also closed.

The venue is currently up for sale. Who knows, maybe someone will step forward and bring The Boardwalk back to life once more...
