Four new players have joined in Darren Moore, Iain Hume, Hugo Roberto Colace and Mounir El Haimour while Paul Reid has joined Colchester and Dwayne Mattis signed for Walsall.

Yet the dealing in players is not likely to end there.

Assistant boss Ryan Kidd said:"You're always looking to improve but at the moment we've a decent-sized squad. It's still early days for transfers and we're looking to add if the right player comes along."

A striker could be top of the club's wanted list and it is thought manager Simon Davey still wants to make another headline signing on top of the £1.2 million deal for Hume before the Championship kicks-off on August 9.

Davey's squad reported back yesterday for the first pre-season training session. Captain Brian Howard, the subject transfer speculation all summer, returned to begin the long warm-up for the campaign.

Injured duo goalkeeper Heinz Muller and midfielder Anderson de Silva were also back. Both have undergone serious knee surgery and were continuing their rehab work with Barnsley physios as the rest of the squad went through a strenuous workout.

"We're delighted with the way everyone has started. All the lads have achieved the close-season targets they were set," Kidd added.

"The new boys have settled in well too. A couple of them have been among the leaders of the group when we've been running.

"We have brought in players who are athletic and can run up and down the pitch all game.

"We want to be fitter than ever."

Barnsley have their first friendly game of the summer a week tonight when they visit Buxton.

The squad have their only pre-season overnight trip on Saturday July 19 when they play at Yeovil.
