THREE defeats on the spin; the one striker with a goal against his name facing suspension; next up Premier League drop-outs Birmingham.
Not looking very clever, is it?

Wouldn't be, that is, if you hadn't set eyes on Barnsley

After nearly a couple seasons, take it as read that manager Simon Davey isn't some sort of flannel-merchant. If it's garbage, he doesn't lift the Axminster and start sweeping.

No brush or whitewash required after Coventry and the first game of the season at Oakwell.

The visitors should have been two or three down before they scored. In the Olympic Games it would have been Michael Phelps v Eric the Eel.

No contest at the start.

Said Davey: "In the first half there was only one team in it and Coventry scored against the run of play.

What do you think? Post your comments below.

"We managed to get back in the game, but one long ball and a bit of magic from Freddy Eastwood has undone us.

"So I am disappointed to lose the game, but there are a lot of positives for us. I think we are a good side; we just need to start putting chances away."

Barnsley could have scored within seconds, should have scored within minutes through Darren Campbell at a corner and only keeper Keiron Westwood playing out of his skin stopped it.

Diego Leon was even better for Barnsley. Carry that on and it's hard to see where Anderson de Silva gets a look in.

But while Leon was laying it off, spraying it about and even testing Westwood, he never attained the influence Freddy Eastwood managed.

Scored one, made the winner, made him the real McCoy.

And when at 2-1 in the 79th minute Iain Hume's rash tackle on Michael Mifsud brought him a second yellow card and his marching orders it was all but over for Barnsley.

They were sore and, apart from Davey, didn't want to talk about it.

Coventry's early luck was confounding and manager Chris Coleman was right to point out that they grew into the game.

While they did that, Barnsley withered.

For the first goal, Eastwood admitted he won the lottery.

"I got a lucky goal, I've gone to cross it and it's gone in," he confessed.

Clinton Morrison came close to sticking a boot out and spoiling it all for Coventry. Being there, close to keeper Luke Steele as the ball homed in, added to the confusion and didn't help Barnsley.

"I think Clinton might have been offside anyway. I'm pleased he didn't touch it because of that," Eastwood added.

"We're delighted we got the three points. We don't seem to be starting brilliantly at the moment but we keep winning."

It might have been 2-0 but for Steele's left-hand post blocking an Elliott Ward header on a Danny Fox free-kick.

Morrison then might have been red-carded, handing Barnsley a penalty.

He'd gone into the book for a foul on Leon then clearly stuck up his hand as a high free-kick flew into the box and got a touch.

Referee Steve Bratt gave a free-kick against Barnsley's Darren Moore, who was accused of a shove in the back.

Davey couldn't agree and claimed the TV pictures backed him up.

"I saw it again at half-time. It was a penalty.
