IT was a bad night for
Sheffield Wednesday,
Barnsley,
Doncaster and
Chesterfield as they all fell at the first hurdle in this season's Carling Cup.
But the night belonged to League Two side
Rotherham United who, down to 10-men, were left celebrating an amazing 5-3 penalty win over
Sheffield Wednesday.
In an emotional rollercoaster ride, worthy of any derby, Championship squad Wednesday took the lead in the 14th minute with a goal from Dutchman Etienne Esejas.
Rotherham's Alex Rhodes equalised a minute later and the Millers held the Owls until extra time. Rotherham's Marc Joseph was sent off in the 116th minute and the resulting free kick saw Esejas make it 2-1.
But Rotherham came back from the dead with a goal from Reuben Reid just a couple of minutes later and took the game to penalties - winning 5-3.
BARNSLEY were trailing 2-0 at half time and that's how the game remained away to League One side Crewe Alexandra.
The Reds had two penalty decisions against them and Northern Ireland international Michael O'Connor fired home the first in the 14th minute.
Team mate Anthony Elding, signed from Leeds, then found the back of the net in the 36th minute.
CHESTERFIELD lost 2-0 away to Preston - with a goal in each half from Sheffield born former Liverpool star Neil Mellor.
He found the net in the 37th minute and with almost the last kick of the game, in the 90th.
The Lilywhites could have been two or three goals up by half time as the home side dominated the game at Deepdale.
DONCASTER Rovers failed to overpower League Two outsiders Notts County and lost 1-0 away at Meadow Lane.
Substitute Myles Weston, a former England Under-17 international, scored in the 106th minute to knock the newly promoted Championship side out of the competition.
