IPSWICH 0 v BARNSLEY 3: FORTUNATELY for goalkeeper Heinz Muller, Barnsley's 3-0 defeat to Ipswich will be remembered for Reuben Noble-Lazarus becoming the youngest player to ever appear in the Football League.
The striker, aged 15 years and 45 days, rose off the bench to beat a record set in 1929 by Bradford Park Avenue's Albert Geldard and equalled in 1951 by Ken Roberts of Wrexham. Both were aged 15 years and 158 days.

Barnsley Academy's 15-year-old was back in the classroom in Huddersfield today while Muller will be desperate to get back to the kind of basics that have earned him a reputation as one of the finest shot-stoppers outside of the Premier League.

Put simply, the German had a nightmare at Portman Road.

Barnsley had looked more threatening in the opening exchanges but, as soon as Muller miscued a clearance in the 21st minute straight to the feet of Town's in-form striker Jon Stead, it was an uphill struggle.

It got worse for the 30-year-old midway through the second-half when he let Ivan Campo's speculative 30-yard effort slip through his grasp just three minutes after Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Owen Garvan had put the Tractor Boys firmly in charge with a sweet finish after a quick counter attack.

Barnsley boss Simon Davey admitted Muller's blunders had cost his team any chance of leaving Ipswich with some points to show for their night's work but he refused to be critical and believes it is the first mistake the 'keeper has made since his move to Oakwell.

"Heinz has been magnificent for me since he signed from Lillestrom. He has probably been one of my best signings. He has never made a mistake for me.

"Unfortunately he made two errors in the game and arguably that has probably cost us the game but I'm not going to criticise him.

"He came in at half-time and said sorry and did the same at full-time. He is man enough to be out there and he will take it on the chin."

The three-goal margin undoubtedly flattered Jim Magilton's side but Barnsley's same problems were rearing their ugly head once again.

They have now gone five matches without finding the net and their profligacy in front of goal has to be remedied if they are to stave off another relegation battle this season.

Before Ipswich took the lead, Barnsley had three very presentable chances to get their noses in front, yet on each occasion the opportunity was spurned.

Iain Hume should have done better when cleverly slipped in by strike partner Jon Macken but the Canadian international shot straight at Wright.

Diego Leon also forced a good save before Denis Souza headed straight at the Ipswich 'keeper from close range. Then came Muller's howler and the confidence visibly drained out of Barnsley.

Ipswich had been there for the taking but Davey's men lacked the killer instinct in front of goal.
