GREEN was the theme for this year's Totley Festival where visitors were urged not to gamble with the earth's future.
The festival, entitled Don't Juggle with the Planet, brought together different 'green' groups who are doing their bit to promote environmental awareness.

Activities on offer at yesterday's event included archery, bowls, basketball coaching and sports races.

Young musicians were encouraged to show off their talent at the Burngreave New Deal for Communities Music Truck and the Escafeld brass Band, Norfolk Park Majorettes and the Lizzie Dripping women's clog dancing team all showcased their skills.

Sheffield Lord Mayor Coun Jane Bird officially opened the eco-friendly event at Greenoak Park which was also supported by a number of commercial organisations who had stalls offering free advice and demonstrations.

Blustery weather was not enough to put people off attending the event, now in its second year, but the wind did cause a few unexpected problems.

"We have really suffered with the wind and quite a few gazebos have gone over," said Jennie Street, one of the organisers.

"But thankfully we seem to have avoided the rain and people have still made the effort to come.

"Totley has a real sense of community spirit and that is reflected here by the scores of people who have brought their families along - some of them even boast three generations of the same family."

Whirlow Farm Trust brought pigs and goats along to the festival as an attraction farm-grown produce was also on sale.

"Around 500 people came to the first event last year and we have easily doubled that this year," said Jennie.

"Now everyone is asking for it to be an annual event - it's good, honest family fun."

Totley will hold its annual Open Garden event on July 12 and 13 followed by the Totley Show in September.

Money raised at this year's Open Garden event will be split between mobility charity Community Transport 17 and a fund currently being set up for a new community building in Totley.
