Tigers v Isle of Wight pictures
The Owlerton skipper bade an emotional farewell to the crowd prior to the match, as Sheffield set about the task of pulling back a 21-point deficit from Tuesday's first leg at Smallbrook.
But as the Islanders started strongly with four race winners in the opening seven heats, it was clear that Tigers weren't going to make the semi-finals.
Star of the show for the visitors was Australian rookie Richard Sweetman, who sped to wins in his opening three rides to put the skids under Sheffield. He went on to card 13 from reserve.
A 5-1 in heat 9 from Paul Cooper and Ben Wilson gave the hosts a glimmer of hope, putting Tigers 31-23 up with six races to go, but when Jason Bunyan scored six points as the Islanders slammed in a tactical ride 7-2 in heat 11 it was all over.
Compton recovered from a last place in the opening heat to finish with a bang, including a spectacular win in the finale as he notched another 5-1 with Cooper.
Ben Wilson, in possibly his last outing for his home-town club, rode superbly for paid 14, beaten only by Sweetman in heat 5.
TIGERS: A. Compton 14, P. Cooper 13+1, B. Wilson 12+2, J. Parsons 8+2, B. Compton 4+1, L. Smethills 1+1.
ISLANDERS: R. Sweetman 13, J. Bunyan 11+1, P. Fry 7, C. Gathercole 4+1, K. Stojanowski 3, A. Bargh 2+1, G. Phillips 1.
