Watch our slideshow of Apple Day
THE humble apple was elevated to star status in a glorious celebration of the fruit at a Sheffield park.
Up to 300 people visited the walled garden in Meersbrook Park yesterday on a beautifully balmy afternoon and enjoyed all things apple - including scrumping.
Highlights included an apple press busily producing juice, bobbing for apples and dipping them in chocolate. Visitors tucked into apple pies and while the adults chatted the children ran around having fun.
Some youngsters even helped themselves to an apple from one of the 15 apple trees in the walled garden - but they soon realised they were all cooking apples and not eating varieties, according to Naomi Brent of the Meersbrook Park Users Trust.
Other attractions included the Garden Band and expert Darrel Maryon helping people identify apples.
Darrel, who is based at Heeley City Farm, said: "People move house and find they have an apple tree in the garden but they've no idea what variety it is. There are more than 3,000 different types in Europe alone."
Some 20 volunteers helped run the day.
