SHEFFIELD Wednesday break new ground at the weekend.
The Championship match at Swansea City's Liberty Stadium on Saturday is a first for the Owls.

Swansea moved there from the Vetch Field two years ago - a lengthy 25 years after Sheffield Wednesday last played them.

Wednesday and the Swans are ra
re rivals with only 23 matches played in 83 years stretching back to 1925.

The statistics show Wednesday with an edge of 11 wins and only four defeats in those league meetings.

There have been seven draws between the two.

A quarter of a century ago Wednesday kicked off their 1983-4 promotion season in the South Wales city. In that astoundingly successful campaign the club retained their place in the top two of the league from September right through to May.

The beginning of the great escape from the old second division under manager Howard Wilkinson came with a 1-0 win at the Vetch Field.

Mick Lyons scored and the Owls line-up had Martin Hodge in goal; a back five of Mel Sterland, Paul Shirliff, Lyons, Lawrie Madden and Charlie Williamson and Chris Morris, Gary Megson and Gary Shelton in midfield behind strikers Gary Bannister and John Pearson.

That team finished the season with 88 points - the same number as Division Two champions Chelsea and eight ahead of third placed Newcastle United. All three climbed to the top flight of English football. A goal difference of 12 denied Wednesday the championship.

Lowly Swansea were relegated alongside Derby County and Cambridge United.
Their visit to Hillsborough in January 1984 didn't help as they were hammered 6-1 by a top of the table Wednesday team. Striker John Toshack, the current Wales manager, scored an own goal in that game two months before his playing contract was cancelled. Lyons, Pearson, Megson, Pat Heard and Imre Varadi also registered for the Owls.
