WEDNESDAY new boy James O'Connor is ready to turn friends into enemies when he faces old club Burnley for the first time in Saturday's Championship opener at Hillsborough.
The combative midfielder insists that there will be no sentiment involved as he prepares to play against the club where he spent three successful years and rejected a new deal this summer.

"There are no friends when you start playing football. Before and after, yes, but when you're out there you just want to win." O'Connor told The Star.

"With it being Burnley, it will be a great day for me, and a tough game for us. Burnley have spent a lot of money in the summer.

"It will certainly be interesting.

"It just got to the stage for me where I felt I was ready for a new challenge.

"I spoke to the manager, Owen Coyle; he offered me a new contract and was keen for me to sign.

"I felt I wasn't going to be rushed into a decision. I spoke to quite a few clubs, but I was really impressed with the manager here (Brian Laws).

"When you add to that the club and the stadium, I felt it was the right move for me.

"The first game of the season is a great occasion for everyone, for the fans and the players.

"At this stage, you just want the season to start; you've done the work in pre-season, and you just want to get going in the games."

Owls manager has praised O'Connor in the wake of last Saturday's friendly against Wigan.

"He plays at a high tempo, he works extremely hard, and he encourages the players around him. He's a winner, a good player," he said.
