SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY strike team Deon Burton and Marcus Tudgay led their side to a convincing 2-0 win over HFC Haarlem in the first pre-season friendly in Heiloo, Holland tonight.
There was nothing artificial about the result, played on a synthetic surface in the Netherlands.
The evening game turned out to be a decent run-out with most of the Hillsborough squad playing a minimum of 45 minutes.
Liam McMenamin, Mark Beevers and Richard Hinds survived the substitutions however and enjoyed a full work-out.
The Dutch rarely looked like breaching a defensive wall which initially included Liam McMenamin and Tommy Spurr.
While Haarlem were set a tricky task in containing Jermaine Johnson and Etienne Esajas on the wings .
Haarlem keeper Marco van Duin was certainly the busier of the two. But the Dutch side, who have been in their nation's second tier for nearly 20 years, kept a clean sheet until the 47th minute.
Then, Burton nipped away from markers and nailed a cross from his partner Marcus Tudgay.
Tudgay then got in on the act. Wade Small found new signing James O'Connor who hammered the ball at van Duin. Tudgay buried the rebound.
Team: Lee Grant, Liam McMenamin, Richard Hinds, Mark Beevers, Tommy Spurr (Peter Gilbert), Jermaine Johnson (Luke Boden), Jimmy Smith (James O'Connor), Steve Watson (Sean McAllister), Etienne Esajas (Wade Small), Leon Clarke (Marcus Tudgay), Deon Burton (Rocky Lekaj)
Goal Scorers: Burton (47), Tudgay (68)
