WEDNESDAY'S new club captain Steve Watson feels that he faces a fight for a place next season.
But his self-belief has been boosted by the end-of-season part he played in helping the team to stay up with victories against Leicester and Norwich.

He is delighted to succeed Lee Bullen as club skipper and feels he has a part to play on and off the field.

"When injuries had kept resurfacing last season it made me think, but the last two or three games reignited my belief that I could be a be a big influence" says the 34-year-old who accepts that competition for places will be tough though he can play in various positions.

"We've signed a couple of lads in midfield; the back four looks formidable when everybody is fit.

"I'm honest enough to admit I'm not going to play every week. But everybody's aim in pre-season is to get as fit as possible and be in the starting line-up for the first game, and I'm no different.

"We still have a very small squad and, as we showed at Leicester, we are capable of adopting different formations, and perhaps using a system that has three or four midfield players.."

It is the first time in his five-club career that Watson has become a club captain: "It's a role that's usually filled by an experienced player, because there's more to it than football. I'm there to help the young players, and to speak on behalf of the players.

"Having a club captain alongside him will also help Richard Wood to keep on being a very good team captain and concentrate on what happens on the pitch. He did a great a job last season. I think he deserves to be team captain, and I'm chuffed to bits for him."

A Wednesday XI will visit Dinnington Town tomorrow. The match at Phoenix Park, kicks-off at 7.45pm.

I noticed that after the report on Sheard's "odd way of doing business" the negative element crept back into this forum in the guise of barnmeg and parson something or other.

I would like to remind you people that as a team for next season we are not that bad. With everyone fighting fit and including a couple of well done deals by BL we could really go a long way. Negativity never achieved anything neither did withdrawing your support if things dont exactly go your way.

This is SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY not the other sorry mob across town. Yes we've got a dud board, rotten management and no money, but it's still SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY and will be around long after some of us have gone. Be proud of your team and give some praise to Brian Laws who has done wonders with absolutly nothing and a bunch of fools telling him what to do.
Stop whinging and look forward to what could be a surprise season for the owls.

Well said 'owl down under' agree totally with your sentiments, as I wrote on the Sheard saga, It may be lonely on the North stand for a while, but I'll be there! Fair weather support belongs at the 'Lane'

if u want 2 buy a season ticket for the club to rub their hands in glee, then do so, i wont be, spend my money on better things, on my family and go away at least once a month then be sat at hillsbro or on away ground in the cold, thinking what a waste of money,

owl down under , ex-chapeltown lad , its clear we are in the minority on this forum for the time-being .
we have been saying for weeks that the team Laws is shaping IS the team of the future and ultimately having no money to spend has ironically worked in the clubs favour .
law's has had to use all his cunning and guile to assemble what is i believe one of the most exciting teams not only in the championship but in s6 for an age .
it has become far too easy to knock rather than praise , forget all the goings - on behind the scenes , let's just concentrate on the bits we are normally privy to i.e the playing side and we should all be looking forward in eager anticipation to what could be one of our best seasons for ages .
COME ON THE WEDNESDAY

Glad to see that their are still a few of us who BELIEVE! Consolation is that the 'fair weather' ones will come along later, agree with them or not their still 'latent' Owls fans at least.

Although I agree with the sentiment, those living in Australia have not had to put up with the abject dross of the last few years. It's a little easier to be positive sat on a beach 12,000 miles away!

t.c tash ..
just remember from abject dross came the likes of granty , charlie , shirty , smithy , blackhall , ticker , zico ,
i just get the feeling that we have turned full circle and are on the brink of producing another fine crop of local talent .
i'm on a beach 100 miles away in llandudno sadly we share the same weather as yourself in s6 !
sentiment maybe , reality more than likely !
COME ON THE WEDNESDAY

South stand left of centre where?---Middlewood.

I'm a Sheffielder born and bread and watched the owls on the cop in the 1950s when the weather was just as cold and some of the teams where just as rubbish. (Ticker Turton, Banister, Gannon,Whitcome and Curtis spring to mind)

Dont tell me about sitting on a beach 12000 miles away either. I still work 12 hour days you pommie dunce

Australia is here for everyone to take advantage of. I saw that years ago and took the chance.
