Spending over for Owls

Published Date: 22 August 2008
WEDNESDAY'S spending appears to be an end for the foreseeable future after the loan signing of right-back Tony McMahon from Middles-brough.
Manager Brian Laws has made it clear that no further loan signings are imminent and that he is ready to continue with a relatively small squad.

It seems that new arrivals are unlikely before the transfer deadline on September 1 - unless another injury crisis forces a rethink.

Laws probably would have liked to add a forward to his squad after Akpo Sodje was ruled out for up to two months ,but the team chief accepted that financial constraints ruled that out.

But Laws and the board have reacted swiftly to the depletion of an already-thin defence by Richard Hinds' injury, finding wage funds to bring in McMahon for a month and possibly for a longer loan.

Laws explained: "This was an emergency. I'd like to have strengthened more, but we're all working within the parameters that we have.

"There's no change, unless there's another emergency.."

Hinds is out for around three months and Frankie Simek is thought to be many weeks away from a comeback.

Laws diplomatically is not being drawn on the takeover issue, but clearly does not appear to be anticipating a sudden influx of cash.

Throughout the Geoff Sheard saga, Laws has taken the neutral stance of accepting that he operates within current financial limits unless something changes.

It is now a week since Sheard accepted that the ball was in his court. The club and major shareholders remain willing sellers but have always sought legal proof of his funding. They have also recently suggested a meeting with his mystery backer.

It seems clear that the Owls are still waiting for the Sheard camp to come up with a conclusion to a saga that has dragged on for six months,

McMahon is set for a debut against Preston at Hillsborough tomorrow. The Owls could also have Marcus Tudgay back.

Presumably they budget at the start of the season for a certain amount of emergency loans, otherwise someone will be leaving in January...

Mr Sheard has gone deathly quiet all of a sudden when only a few a couple of weeks ago he was claiming in various parts of the media that the deal would be done in a matter of days. Now it seemshe won't go anywhere near a microphone.

It seems clear from the snippets of information coming from Hillsborough and Wednesdayite that it is Sheard and his mystery backers that are now the ones holding up the deal. So Mr Sheard, pull your finger out and do the deal and if you are not holding up the deal tell us who is! The first signings need to be a decent physio and fitness coach as we do seem to be extraordinarily unlucky with injuries or we are not preparing our players properly.

Perhaps Sheard has realised its not worth becoming a football chairman to be verbally abused and threatened and thats before he's even taken over.

Great to see Tuggers and Esajas shake off their injury concerns quickly to get back amongst it. The quote 'Frankie Simek is thought to be many weeks away from a comeback' deeply concerns me. Many weeks sounds like at least January to me, and I'm positive we'll see Akpo back in an Owls shirt before Jeffers, p*ss weak mate, not worthy!! C'mon lads lets get back on track with a win tomorrow. UP THE OWLS!!
