Sodje in new fitness fear

SHEFFIELD Wednesday today kicked off an important week with Akpo Sodje beginning a new fight for fitness.
Manager Brian Laws hopes the talismanic striker will be fit for Saturday's home game against Coventry after feeling a fresh niggle during his comeback in the 3-0 defeat at Derby.

Laws has also revealed that wingers Etienne Esajas (Achilles) and Wade Small (hamstring) were both unavailable for the Pride Park match.

Esajas was replaced by Sodje as the centre-forward made his first senior start since the first match of the season, partnering Leon Clarke up front, while there were wide midfield roles for Sean McAllister and Marcus Tudgay.

Sodje was taken off the 57th minute as part of a double substitution but earlier felt a "tweak" in his hamstring at the back of his knee - it was a more severe injury in this area that led to his recent lay-off.

But Laws also said that the striker had a similar niggle after his return last month for the Sheffield derby but it cleared up in around a week.

"It settled down pretty quickly last time; hopefully it will settle down the same this time and he'll be okay for the weekend," he said.

Defender Peter Gilbert was also unfit for the Derby game, said Laws, who only last week was enjoying his most injury-free run in months.

In the wake of a post-match team meeting that lasted nearly an hour, the Owls boss said: "I've said my bit; the players have said theirs. We need a reaction. I expect a reaction on Saturday."

Despite the injuries, Laws had felt confident in his selection and the team's capability but was dismayed by the return or poor away form.

"We know we're better than that," he said.

Today it was the board's turn for a meeting - where directors will begin to address the issue of Laws' contract and the players who have agreements that, like his, run out next summer. The club are also likely to discuss the takeover issue and suggestions made to them by fan group Wednesdayite.

Do we think there is any chance we could get Redknapp in the summer?? There is no point getting rid of Laws because who in their right mind is going to come to a club where they have nothing to spend! As far as the players, we need a couple of players like Lee Bullen at the back that can give some experiance. Think its about time Burton and Clarke went and we brought a goal scorer in. If there was someone that could score, maybe we could have a decent strike force of Jeffers (if he could go 5 mins without getting injured!), Tudgay and A N Other. A shuffle is whats needed in the summer or we will have the same team next season. Oh and if Father Christmas is reading can we please have some decent fitness staff that can get a player to return to play longer than 45 mins without hobbling off again and spending the next 3 months on the bench!!

poor performance by all on saturday...although we did give Derby 2 goals...need to cut out basic errors.

as for the formation i felt lumping the ball down the middle was playing right into Derbys hands.. the wings were where it was at, although because stewart had pace the inability of johnson to better his man was evident..

Would also like to see a sodje and jeffers partnership. Leon has had a go but just isnt quite upto it..nothing personal.

Have to pick up 3 points out of the next 2 games now.

Up the Owls..

Sodje felt a "tweak" in his hamstring and now is doubtful because of a 'niggle"?
When asked, Ron Atkinson once said that his ideal physio "...would be leaning against the locked door of the medical room, telling the players to 'get out and play' ". Maybe some of that spirit wouldn't go amiss at Hillsbrough these days.

Wasn't Ron Atkinson the reason we only had David Hirst playing a third of the games? I believe there was some statement that the physio would be asked if Hirst could play for 20 minutes and get a goal, which he did, then got more and more injured.
If not looked after correctly, tweaks and niggles are what turn into a reacurance of the original injury.

I agree with ng10 Owl, its time to see Jeffers and Sodje as a partnership, even if its for an hour each game while the injuries fully heal

The only place you'll see Jeffers and Sodje as a partnership is in the Northern General.
And speaking of Hirsty, why did he shave his head, take his shirt off, and then get thrown out at Derby?
