Slusarski out to finish the job

BARTOSZ Slusarski is bidding to complete a celebration double on Sunday.
The Owls' on-loan striker was delighted when his club West Brom practically clinched promotion with the draw against Southampton.

Now he aims to make it a week to remember by helping the Owls to secure their Championship survival.

He also hopes to sign off at Hillsborough with a home goal to follow his first and vital one for the club, at Leicester.

"Hopefully that goal and that game will have helped Sheffield Wednesday to stay up," he said.

"Now we have our very important game against Norwich. Of course we must do everything to win it.

"No matter who scores, it is important that we win - hopefully, I can score as well."

His only other goal since his £680,000 arrival in England last summer was against Norwich - when he was on loan at Blackpool and netted in a 3-1 defeat at Bloomfield Road in November.

Life is looking up for the Pole who was on the bench for the first five games of his Owls loan spell but made his full debut at Blackpool then played at Leicester and struck the equaliser that turned last Saturday's big game.

"It has been a good time for me; I have enjoyed my month here," he said.

"When I first came I didn't play too much. I understand that, because this team had played together.

"When the manager gave me the chance of my first start, it was good. But we lost, at Blackpool. We did not play well. I did not play well.

"I had chances to score, a few times, before last Saturday. It was very good to get the goal.

"I thought Franck Songo'o was going to have a shot; he passed the ball to me; I turned with one touch and struck the ball with my left foot.

"We had been losing this important game. We needed to draw, minimum. We wanted to win."

The Owls' celebrations at the Walker Stadium were followed two days later by West Brom's at The Hawthorns.

"I am happy for my friends at West Brom that they are promoted and I am happy for their fans," added Slusarski.

"Hopefully it will be the same for ours on Sunday."

After Chris Brunt did the Owls a favour when his equaliser on Monday denied Southampton victory, another former Owls star, Glenn Whelan, can aid his old club's cause when Stoke face Leicester.

If Whelan's title-chasing Stoke outfit beat the Foxes then Wednesday are safe.

But of course the Owls, regardless of other results that could dictate matters, are determined to seal survival by their own efforts with a win against Norwich.

Brian Laws will keep the Canaries guessing about his team and tactics, and has already shown himself to be bold enough to spring surprises.

Last week he left out Jermaine Johnson and fielded all three of his main strikers, Slusarski, Deon Burton and Ben Sahar.

Laws kicked off with a 4-4-2, with Sahar playing down the right, but made a pre-planned early switch to 4-2-1-3, with Franck Songo'o operating behind the three strikers.

Wednesday also had attacking options on the bench, with Johnson, Etienne Esajas and Leon Clarke there.

Again the approach is certain to be positive, whatever the line-up.

The main uncertainty centres on the right-back spot: Frankie Simek and Richard Hinds are out, of course, and Lee Bullen stayed off at half time at Leicester after a recurrence of hamstring trouble.

That meant a second emergency stint at full back for Johnson.

If Bullen does not make it on Sunday - and misses out on a farewell appearance with his contract ending this summer - then Johnson and Steve Watson appear to be the main options.

A switch for Watson would create a midfield gap for which Graham Kavanagh would be a contender if he has recovered from the hamstring niggle that kept him out last week.

OWLS (possible): Grant; Bullen or Watson or Johnson, Wood, Beevers, Spurr; Sahar, Kavanagh or Watson, Bolder, Songo'o; Slusarski, Burton. (4-4-2).

NORWICH (possible): Marshall; Otsemobor, Doherty, Shackell, Bertrand; Huckerby, Fotheringham, Russell, Pattison; Cureton, Evans. (4-4-2).

Meanwhile, The Middlewood dome is back up after repairs to damage caused by gales in March.
