OWLS striker Deon Burton could be setting off on the World Cup trail to follow his Championship comeback.
His selection for Jamaica's friendly against Trinidad and Tobago next week means that he is in the thoughts of technical director Rene Simoes as they build up for the 2010 World Cup.
If he plays in Kingston next Wednesday it will be an international renaissance for the 31-year-old former Rotherham forward - the first time he has represented his country since a 6-0 defeat by England at Old Trafford two years ago.
Jamaica are certain to have been alerted by his two-goal Championship salvo and return to the Wednesday set-up during the last 12 days.
Brian Laws is pondering whether or not he is happy to release Burton for a long-distance friendly at such an important stage of the League season, but even if the striker did not make the trip this time, the door clearly could remain open in the future.
What do you think. Post your comment below.Jermaine Johnson too might have been staking a claim but he has been in and out of the Owls team in recent weeks and is serving a four-match ban. He played for Jamaica as a sub in a 3-0 win against El Salvador in November.
United's Luton Shelton and Barnsley's Jamal Campbell-Ryce are in next week's squad as well and they are among 13 overseas-based players selected. The others are captain Ricardo Gardner (Bolton), Marlon King (Wigan), Donovan Ricketts (Bradford), Demar Phillips (Stoke), Omar Daley (Bradford), Ian Goodison (Tranmere ), Demar Stewart (Royal White Star, Belgium), Oneil Thompson (Nottoden, Norway), Khari Stephenson (AIK Stockholm, Sweden), and Tyrone Marshall (Toronto).
Both Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago are tuning up for second-round World Cup qualifiers in June, after receiving byes in the first round.
Burton burst back on the Hillsborough scene by going on as a sub against QPR when the team were trailing in the first half, a week last Saturday. He helped to put the team on the way to a 2-1 win, and put away a match-winning penalty. Then he scored the equaliser in the 2-1 victory at Colchester.
The former Derby star has reformed his partnership with Marcus Tudgay but will still face competition for his Owls place from Enoch Showunmi, who scored two for the reserves on Tuesday, and Ben Sahar, who is back to fitness.
Leon Clarke will be hoping to add his own challenge after playing for half the reserve match against Leeds.
