WEDNESDAY are being warned that Norwich intend to finish the season with a flourish on Sunday - in their own interests and to be fair to the other clubs in the relegation scrap.
City manager Glenn Roeder admits that the mood in his camp has been a little more relaxed than usual after the team sealed safety with last Saturday's 3-0 win against 10-man QPR.

But he insists: "I don't want them too relaxed because we need to go and win at Hillsborough.

"It is very important to me, this game. I know we're safe but we owe it to ourselves if we are going to create a winning culture; we can't go up there and put on a poor performance and lose.

"AIso I think it is important to the other managers who are involved in the relegation struggle that we put on a proper performance, and try and win three points for ourselves, first and foremost.

"I would hate to think that the other managers would look at our performances and say we didn't do our best."

Canaries' captain and midfielder player Mark Fotheringham said: "We need to finish on a high. We need to keep a winning mentality in the squad.

"We've got people who will be travelling a long way up to Sheffield to watch us, so we'll try to put on a performance, especially for the guys who are leaving and obviously Dion Dublin's big send-off." Dublin is retiring at the age of 39.

Fotheringham added: "Even though it is the last game of the season, there will be guys who are trying to impress the manager for a new contract, myself included.

"There will be lads there who could be trying to impress other clubs or lads who feel they've not been given a fair crack and they'll want to try to force the manager's hand for next season, so there's so much to play for."

The midfielder is out of contract this summer but says he wants to stay at Carrow Road.

Roeder, appointed six months ago, has accomplished the most important part of his mission by leading his club from the bottom of the table to safety.

"I've always maintained that the players being relaxed and staying calm even in the difficult situation we have been in these six months has been key to us picking up the amount of points we have needed to stay up," he said.

"I have never allowed the atmosphere at the training ground to be tense and nervous because they are useless human emotions."

"It's been a struggle at times. There have been ups and downs, there have been big disappointments, but there has been plenty of joy and happiness with some of the results we have had."

Roeder kept Newcastle up and took them into Europe but regards his salvation of Norwich as the highlight of his career: "When you consider where we've come from, it's only right that Norwich fans should celebrate.

"When I came here we looked dead and buried. I don't know how I kept a straight face when I went into that job interview telling them I would keep Norwich up.

"You tell me any other club that has only got eight points in November and ends up avoiding relegation."

Wednesday contributed to the October exit of Roeder's predecessor Peter Grant by winning 1-0 at Carrow Road in September. Wade Small got the goal.

Now the Canaries boss has set his sights on promotion: "A club like Norwich City need to be in the Premiership, and we need to do it in the two or three years.

"I don't want anyone in this club playing in the comfort zone, whether that is on the pitch or off the pitch, and that includes all my staff.

"We need to stretch ourselves, I need to be stretched, and you have to set yourself targets, difficult targets, and then when you achieve them it is very fulfilling."
