SHEFFIELD Wednesday are reeling from the shock of losing Richard Hinds for around three months.
The damage suffered by the Owls right-back at Wolves has been diagnosed as a fracture of the fibula - the lesser bone in the lower leg - and a dislocated ankle.

Manager Brian Laws wants to sign a defender on loan now that his worst fears about Hinds have been confirmed after the full-back was carried off at Molineux in stoppage time and taken to hospital.

It is another blow to the Owls after the injuries to Akpo Sodje, Marcus Tudgay and, on Saturday, Etienne Esajas, and a bombshell for the defender who missed last season's run-in with an ankle injury.

Laws feels that defence is the thinnest part of the squad. long-term absentee Frankie Simek is not ready for a comeback, and Hinds was his deputy.

What do you think? Post your comments below.

Steve Watson - who is currently preferred in a midfield role - and untried youngster Liam McMenamin look the only alternatives at right-back.

Laws' thoughts last week were on the striker department after Sodje and Tudgay were injured.

He admitted then that, while he would like to add to his relatively small squad, there was no money for signings.

But the Hinds blow appears to mean a re-examination of the financial position.

Laws, who said he was "gutted" for Hinds, commented: "We'll be looking hopefully to bring somebody in."

He also hopes that Esajas will be fit for the visit of Preston on Saturday after missing the second half on Saturday with a hamstring niggle.

"He wanted to go out for the second half but we had to withdraw him as a precaution," Laws said.

"I think he should be fit for the weekend."

Laws is also determined that the 4-1 defeat at Wolves should not completely undo a successful pre-season or the optimism generated by the 4-1 win against Burnley. on opening day.

"I'm disappointed only with the second half at Wolves," he said. "There were a lot of plusses in the first half."

Laws also praised keeper Lee Grant, who helped to keep Wolves at bay at times, though the home side bounced back after Esajas put the Owls ahead.

"Since he has been at the club, Lee has been excellent. He's pulled off a few more saves to keep us close to staying the game," said the Owls chief.

The fourth goal came in stoppage time when Wednesday were down to 10 men after using their subs and seeing Hinds carried off.

Oh dear. Its last season all over again! Come on Sheard, stop taking the p*ss! Sort the takeover out, fans are bored of stupid dates given by YOU for the takeover to be completed and false claims that things are moving forward. We need to see something concrete!

"Oh dear. Its last season all over again! Come on Sheard, stop taking the p*ss!"

You sound just like one of those scum who abused Sheard at the Wolves match, how the hell is Geoff taking the piss? If anyone is it's the moronic "fans" who abuse and blame Geoff for the takeover being slow.

We're 30m in debt, nobody else is interested, but hey let's abuse the one man who's been trying to help us out of this pit we're in.

I say to anyone abusing Geoff, Get a life, get a grip, or get a new club to "support".

Sod buying new players; get some decent medical staff- this is a joke.OK Hinds may have been a bit of a freak injury but we suffer far too many muscle strains & it's been going for over 10 years; in other words, since Alan Smith left!

Where do you start with all this? I've been on for months about the shortcomings of weds. i've had abuse about being on a beach 13000 miles away, about being a girl by some numb skull calling himself parson x or being a convict by some other idiot--but the fact remains that there is no mystery buyer,no jeffers, no Simek, no money, no proper training set up, no reserves, no defence, no luck and definately no prospects. Tell me I'm wrong with some logic and I'll be the first to agree. If not then face it. We're stuffed.

That is not good news! We already have a small squad as it is. In the Championship you cannot let that happen especially how some of the team we have are youngsters. Nothing agaist them at all, I wish them all the luck but what WE NEED NOW is a bit of experiance in the team that is proven at Championship level, what WE NEED NOW is some serious money, what WE NEED NOW is a takeover!!

I wasn't at the Wolves match but it's atrocious that the fans abused Mr.Sheard. We need him to complete the takeover and then we may have some cash to buy some players. It's not all doom and gloom, we trounced Burnley even with our small squad. Keep positive!

a man who knows,

18/08/2008 13:08:23
were the owls fans bad mouthing sheard at wolves?

That is frustration getting the better of genuine supporters, who are prob very much in favour of sheard's bid, all weds fans are gutted at the reversal of fortunes since the first match, but they who did bad mouth sheard, prob would be less hasty to do so if they were kept informed about when this takeover is going to relieve the long starved owls fans off their football depression, i am sure sheard is just as frustrated that he was pressured by radio sheffield and possibly atleast misrepresented as stating he would be in control in a few days. but two weeks has passed since he got the vote, we are all ears, what's going on wednesday/sheard?
