SHEFFIELD Wednesday are reeling from the shock of losing Richard Hinds for around three months.
The damage suffered by the Owls right-back at Wolves has been diagnosed as a fracture of the fibula - the lesser bone in the lower leg - and a dislocated ankle.
Manager Brian Laws wants to sign a defender on loan now that his worst fears about Hinds have been confirmed after the full-back was carried off at Molineux in stoppage time and taken to hospital.
It is another blow to the Owls after the injuries to Akpo Sodje, Marcus Tudgay and, on Saturday, Etienne Esajas, and a bombshell for the defender who missed last season's run-in with an ankle injury.
Laws feels that defence is the thinnest part of the squad. long-term absentee Frankie Simek is not ready for a comeback, and Hinds was his deputy.

Laws' thoughts last week were on the striker department after Sodje and Tudgay were injured.
He admitted then that, while he would like to add to his relatively small squad, there was no money for signings.
But the Hinds blow appears to mean a re-examination of the financial position.
Laws, who said he was "gutted" for Hinds, commented: "We'll be looking hopefully to bring somebody in."
He also hopes that Esajas will be fit for the visit of Preston on Saturday after missing the second half on Saturday with a hamstring niggle.
"He wanted to go out for the second half but we had to withdraw him as a precaution," Laws said.
"I think he should be fit for the weekend."
Laws is also determined that the 4-1 defeat at Wolves should not completely undo a successful pre-season or the optimism generated by the 4-1 win against Burnley. on opening day.
"I'm disappointed only with the second half at Wolves," he said. "There were a lot of plusses in the first half."
Laws also praised keeper Lee Grant, who helped to keep Wolves at bay at times, though the home side bounced back after Esajas put the Owls ahead.
"Since he has been at the club, Lee has been excellent. He's pulled off a few more saves to keep us close to staying the game," said the Owls chief.
The fourth goal came in stoppage time when Wednesday were down to 10 men after using their subs and seeing Hinds carried off.
