BRIAN Laws has begun a scouting mission as he bids to sign a right-back on loan.
The Sheffield Wednesday manager watched a game last night and will cast his eye over further targets this week.

Besides checking on players' availability with clubs, he is assessing their match fitness.

The Owls are providing Laws with funds as an emergency measure, with the defence depleted by Richard Hinds's ankle injury.

"Certainly I'm looking for a replacement right-back and if there's one available for the right finance I should be able to bring him in," said the Hillsborough boss, who obviously must also be satisfied that any loan player can do a good job in the Championship.

Injury problems mean that Wednesday are likely to field a young side when the reserves play their first match of the season tonight, against Sheffield United at Hillsborough (7pm).

Francis Jeffers has picked up a minor strain in training and will not be risked, and Laws is shielding senior members of his squad.

If there is money forthcoming in an "emergency" then why have we waited until now for this to happen when all the good players have been snapped up. Just another "mistake" eh? Will we ever see Jeffers back at S6 or will we be doomned to pay his huge wage bill until retirement. No wonder Mclean wanted to leave. We should have upped the ante on him and forgot about Jeffers. Believe that Laws really upset JJ this weekend--he'll be in for transfer next.. The team selections are baffling BL. Right sided players on the left and vice versa. When will all this end??

'Glass' Jeffers rewminds me of another ex-Evertonian - Hinchcliffe, who skived his way supposedly injured, through most of his contract here. Jeffers has just about caught Hinch up - with knocks here and strains there - Can't ever see him putting more than 3 or 4 games together for us. Even that would be a plus! Any stats on how many consecutive games of 3 or more, he has played for us? Best write him off!!

What you need to understand is, when a player comes back from a serious injury, and begins to train hard again, the rest of the body compensates for the injury, meaning it is prone to pick up niggles.
I think Laws is doing right in not throwing Jeffers back in, whats the point in risking him now, when in a few more weeks he could end up getting us a lot of goals.
I see the main problem as, our only other attacker is Leon Clark, and i'm not sure he is good enough at league 2 level, nevermind Championship. Is it an emergency at right back, where we can play Watson, or an emergency up front, where poor Burton is flicking the ball on to nothing??

all laws did with jj is tell him to stop doing unneccesary tricks in our own half ala fergie told ronaldo, it cost us a goal and esajas on the right and jj on left was working well our goal came from esajas cutting in

I agree, i would gladly give the shirt to anyone who will put in the effort.
We cant afford to but quality, so what we lack in that area we have to make up for in effort, it looks to me that Big Daft Leon has none of the above.
Do we not have a youth system?? Do we not have a single attacker in there that we could give a chance to?

Nothing new for JJ, he did the attempt jinks in his own half several times last season. I honestly thought he'd ironed out that problem and it is a problem, save it for the last third pal. The right on left and left on right works, keep switching the wingers about, very difficult for defenders to deal with.
