Owls battles as rivals plan raid for Wood

SHEFFIELD Wednesday will be bracing themselves this weekend to fight off a bid for central defender Richard Wood.
There is speculation in the Midlands that Coventry City are set to follow long-standing interest in the Owls skipper with a bid to tie up a deal before the closure of the transfer window at midnight on Monday.

With their squad resources spread thinly and sparse defensive cover after the recent injury to Richard Hinds on top of Frank Simek's long absence, Wednesday appear in no position to let their skipper go.

A huge offer, one they simply could not afford to turn down, would be needed to even tempt them.

Even then Wednesday could hardly let a player in a key position go without an adequate replacement, unless the player in question indicates he would like to go.

Manager Brian Laws is unlikely to offer Coventry or any club encouragement unless he has been working to line up a replacement.

After tomorrow's game at Swansea, there is a fortnight's break until the next fixture on September 13 by which time emergency loan transfers will be permitted.

The Coventry interest initially surfaced last season and appeared to stiffen a couple of months ago.

We should resist the bid whatever they offer, however I assume the Coop Bank will have a big say in this as nothing has happened on the takeover front.
Leicester have just turned down a 5m bid for an 18 year old full back so whats that make Wood worth?
I fear for the attendances though if we let him go, 17,000 last home game, we'll be lucky to hit 15,000 next game

Sheffield Star stoking the flames with more rubbish written about wednesday! why on earth would Wood hand in a transfer request to join Coventry- makes no sense at all.
All the other media are reporting that Laws will not sell unless there is a massive offer, so the Star either has some real insider info from Wood himself or you're just writing garbage beyond your ususal drivel. Why not report fact rather than idle assumptions?

must say i'm really dissapointed with richard wood putting in a transfer request at this time for whatever the reason ( other than domestic )
he is the nucleus of the team , team captain and most importantly the future of the club alongside the rest of the back 5 .
i know its a purely selfish stance but there we are , i think we desperatley need him to stay at this time .well done brian laws in making this common knowledge as until he did i must say i simply did not believe it .

Quite clear now that The Star did know about the transfer request and Wednesady were holding back. Nothing has come out as to why Woods has requested a transfer and clearly Coventry is a side ways move. But whose to say is is Coventry ,I've heard Birmingham are also sniffing around.
All this seems a bit strange when he only accepted the captains job at the start of the season. Clearly not alls well at S5.
