Sheffield Wednesday 2 v Wigan 3:
WEDNESDAY manager Brian Laws is confident that his team will stiffen their defence against set-pieces in League games after two headers from corners sent Wigan on the way to a friendly win.
First-class delivery from winger Daniel De Ridder and emphatic work in the air by Emile Heskey and Titus Bramble did the damage.

Laws said: "We got done on two set-pieces. In friendlies you're never sure who's going to be playing for the opposition, so our players didn't really know who they were going to be marking.

"We'll work on the Burnley game. We'll get all the information required; we'll know their strengths and weaknesses."

Wednesday twice got back into a reasonably entertaining final friendly, with goals by Jermaine Johnson and Deon Burton.

Goal-getter stakes his claim for Wednesday

Egyptian striker Amr Zaki poached an injury-time winner after Wigan looked lively in the last half hour but even that did not take the shine off a respectable performance against a side who had thrashed Barnsley 6-0 earlier in the week.

Laws said: "It was a fantastic work-out. I wanted us to be really stretched, which you're always going to get from a Premiership team.

"We held our own and exposed Wigan at times. We had some good link-up play and scored a very good goal.

"It was very good preparation."

Burton set up a first equaliser with a lovely ball across the impressive new Hillsborough pitch.

Johnson used pace and clever footwork to nip through the centre of the Wigan defence and slot home a low shot.

Burton put the Owls back in the game in the 54th minute when he tucked away a penalty head-high to the left of a wrong-footed keeper after Marcus Tudgay was brought down from behind by left back Maynor Figueroa.

Other points to note for Owls fans included excellent saves Lee Grant, a role for Tudgay on the right of midfield for most of the game, first Johnson then Etienne Esajas on the left and the selection of the busy James O'Connor as the man to solve last season's wastefulness on set-pieces. His corners and free kicks were ok.

Wigan's Premiership quality was often evident. They brought on dangerous forwards as subs and after a flurry of late chances and Antoine Sibierski hitting the post, Zaki finally scored with a close-range shot.
