FRANCIS Jeffers was today set to step up his claim for a Wednesday place by playing for the reserves at Stocks-bridge.
His chances of facing Coventry at Hillsborough on Saturday could also be influenced by a scan on Akpo Sodje.

The club are awaiting the results of scans on Sodje, Wade Small and Etienne Esajas.

Although the injuries have blotted a previously improving fitness scenario, the Owls were still set to field some experienced players in the reserves this afternoon (2pm) against Grimsby at Stocksbridge in a League Cup group game.

Jimmy Smith returns after a four-match ban, received after he was sent off at Birming-ham.

The side was also set to include Deon Burton, Frankie Simek and Lewis Buxton.

Sodje went off in last Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Derby with a niggle at the back of his knee; Small (hamstring) and Esajas (Achilles tendon) were both ruled out of the game, along with Peter Gilbert (Achilles), who is expected to be fit for the Coventry match.

Chief executive Kaven Walker refused to comment on yesterday's monthly board meeting.

It is understood that a wide range of issues was discussed.

The Owls would have to decide whether to release a statement, something that is not usually done after routine meetings.

Issues up for discussion are thought to have included the contracts of Brian Laws and several players, suggestions from Wednesdayite, and the takeover saga.

Defender Liam McMenamin is in the Northern Ireland Under 21 squad for tonight's match against Scotland in Hamilton. He made an Under 21 breakthrough earlier this year though he is only 19.

Jermaine Johnson faces a crucial World Cup qualifier for Jamaica against Canada in Kingston tomorrow, with his country needing to win to keep alive their hopes of reaching the 2010 finals.

The board's relationship with the supporters is as pathetic as ever.

At last years AGM they said "mistakes have been made, but lessons have been learned, and we are going to communicate with the supporters who are our life blood"

We are still waiting. The only communication from Hillsborough that we have received in the last twelve months was for season ticket renewals and raffle ticket sales.

Absolute tripe.

Older supporters will remember that 6 or 7 years ago Ernie Hinchliffe spent years on the salary list at Hillsborough, without playing a game due to injury, with wages in excess of £800k p.a. He had a contract which the club honored and which is still part of the debt, thanks to ex-chairman Sir Dave et al (check him out on Google and Wiki for further details e.g. any business contacts with South Africa).
The club learned nothing from this and 1-goal Jeffers (always injury prone even when bought for £300k from wise old Mark Hughes when surplus to requirements at Blackburn) should then have been a lesson to all at Hillsborough and should now be remembered in any future purchases.

Totally agree... Ask any Rangers, Blackburn, Charlton (etc etc) fan and youll get the same answer. Jeffers has never made any significant contribution, so why SWFC were expecting him to be any different Ill never know. And as we´ve seen, he is a sub at best.
