DEON Burton is set to spearhead the Sheffield Wednesday attack for Saturday's Championship opener and get his wish of a chance to carry on where he left off last season.
A penalty goal and some useful play by the striker in the final friendly against Wigan crowned what Brian Laws described as "a super pre-season" for the rejuvenated Jamaica international.
Burton played a part in the 2007-08 run-in and finished on a high, with two goals and a man-of-the-match show against Norwich.
He told The Star that he hoped to keep his place - though the return to fitness of Akpo Sodje, Marcus Tudgay and Francis Jeffers has upped the competition.
Laws happy to see Owls at full stretch: MATCH REPORT AND SLIDESHOWBurton was on form for Jamaica early in the summer and has carried on in similar vein in Wednesday's pre-season matches, so looks certain to play in the Championship opener against Burnley on Saturday.
Laws admitted: "Deon's had a super pre-season. Let's hope it continues into the season.
"He's put himself very forward in my thoughts. Akpo Sodje also showed what he can give us."
While Sodje looks favourite to start as Burton's strike partner for the first league game, Jeffers is due to make a delayed comeback in a private friendly against Bradford tomorrow.
Laws had planned to field Jeffers, Jimmy Smith and Steve Watson against Wigan but decided after all that a low-key outing out of the spotlight would be preferable.
All three should be in the squad for Saturday.
Wade Small is making good progress after a hamstring problem but will not be ready for the Burnley game, confirmed Laws.
Jermaine Johnson profited from a Burton pass to score the Owls' other goal in 3-2 defeat by Wigan.
An injury-time winner by the Premier League team failed to dent Laws' view that it was a useful workout for his side.
The Wednesday boss felt that a decent performance against a strong Latics line-up was "very good preparation" for the start of the league campaign.
