A tyre fire near Meadowhall which sent smoke billowing over Sheffield is believed to have been started deliberately.

Members of the public spotted thick plumes of smoke rising above trees close to the shopping centre this afternoon.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said the smoke came from a pile of flaming tyres in Greasbro Road, beside the M1 and close to Tinsley Roundabout.

A spokeswoman for the brigade said it was called at 2.51pm and sent firefighters from Parkway and Rotherham fire stations, who remained at the scene until 3.30pm.

She added that the blaze was believed to have been started deliberately.
