Chris Wilder has made a big signing at Bramall Lane, but this one is all for charity.

Sheffield United’s manager added his signature and the initials UTB (Up The Blades) to a giant banner heralding the Blade’s title-winning success, which will now be auctioned off to raise money for the lord mayor’s charities.

The banner hung outside Sheffield Town Hall earlier this month as fans gathered to hail their League One-winning heroes at a promotion party.

It was a very different affair from the wild scenes that night as Wilder joined Sheffield’s lord mayor, Councillor Denise Fox, to sign the banner.

Blades fans have until the end of the month to submit a sealed bid for the special memento by emailing lordmayor@sheffield.gov.uk.

For those who celebrated a little too hard at the promotion party - and don’t recall a lot - it could prove a handy reminder of one of the proudest evenings in the Blades’ recent history.

The proceeds will go towards the mayor’s chosen charities - St Luke’s Hospice, Sparkle Sheffield, Support Dogs and ABF The Soldiers’ Charity - which have so far this year benefited from more than £20,000.

Coun Fox said: “It’s great that Chris has signed this banner which will mean so much to Sheffield United fans across the city – we’ll hopefully raise a considerable amount for charity.

“We now wish Sheffield Wednesday the very best in their bid to reach the Premier League and know the city will be celebrating more sporting success soon.”
