YOUR VERDICT: Should clubs cover the cost of matchday policing?

Should football clubs be forced to cover the cost of matchday policing away from their grounds in South Yorkshire?

"This is a catch 22 situation, football clubs could just pay what they can afford, then the local areas will have to face the consequences if any trouble is caused, or football clubs pay more, which means everyday fans have their ticket prices increased but ultimately their safety is more guaranteed.

"I believe it would really benefit football clubs to have the support of the FA on an important issue like this, they are the governing body and have some responsibility for governing the game and all that comes with it.

"If this issue is country-wide then this unified approach would help ensure that football clubs and ultimately the fans get the best outcome."

Peter Smith, aged 27, Hillsborough.

"The clubs must pay for all external policing at football matches. It is unfair that the general public fund this cost and suffer a shortage of policing in suburban areas on match days.

"The clubs are not exactly short of a bob or two, judging by the income they receive from satellite payments and the absurd wages paid to players."

Barry Cummings, aged 65, Broomhall.

"It would just mean ticket prices and everything else to do with the supporter supporting his club will increase.

"I get told that when the police are called to an incident on any estates in Sheffield people are told the police are far too busy in the city centre to attend, so do the pubs and shops pay the police extra money for this service?

"At the end of the day we could always use the City Ambassadors, who will before long have as much power as the police."

Kevan Smith, aged 51, Manor.
