YOUR VERDICT: Should the PCT HQ cost £1.4 million?

We asked our readers' panel: Should Sheffield Primary Care Trust spend £1.4 million fitting out its news headquarters when it has been making cuts to patient care? Here's their verdict and if you want to have your say just add a comment below.

"This is outrageous and almost unbelievable, given the lack of money in the Sheffield NHS system - they have a variety of buildings already, including the HQ in Fulwood.

"Can I reply as an older person with a variety of long-term health problems? The lack of money in the system in Sheffield makes it extremely difficult to get treatment, there are long waiting lists and I had to go private to get into the treatment system. GPs are reluctant to refer you for anything which will strain their budget."

Richard Roper, aged 58, Gleadless.

"I am amazed but not surprised. We have bodies who scrutinise this sort of thing and then say, "Oh well, go ahead". It's not so much the amount of money but how it is spent.

"We have people queuing to register for dentists, our GP surgeries are bursting at the seams, cuts have been made to services, yet we can afford to spend this amount of money on refurbishing offices.

"If, as the unnamed spokeswoman for Sheffield PCT said, management costs have been reduced with 3 million saved each year, why could this not be used for this refurbishment instead of drawing on the funds of GPs and dental surgeries?"

Kevan Smith, aged 51, Manor.
