YOUR VERDICT: Sheffield's new retail quarter
THIS week, The Star revealed Sheffield's £600 million new Sevenstone retail quarter development has been put on hold indefinitely by developer Hammerson until the economy recovers. We asked the views of our readers' panel about the news.
"I can only say it is a case of shouting 'Hossanna' and 'Alleluia'.
"This ill-conceived scheme is too large, will demolish too large an area whilst development takes place and will drive away many businesses, only to replace them with national chains paying high rents.
"This is how these redevelopments work.
"Terrible tacky buildings are being proposed (seen the exhibitions?) and the redevelopment will intrude into Barker's Pool square in front of the City Hall.
"But pressing on with the 'preparatory work' for it is even worse madness. This is why we are getting derelict buildings as businesses move out and compulsory purchase orders take place, even demolitions.
"It is also the reason for semi-derelict streets. It would be much better to stop this, let businesses remain and find tenants for empty buildings.
"There is just about the proverbial snowball's chance in hell of it going ahead.
"I went to Meadowhall today and was staggered how empty it was. I have never seen such empty car parks, few shoppers and as little traffic going in and out.
"If that's the effect of the credit crunch there is no chance of a similar scheme such as the NRQ going ahead in the present climate."
Richard Roper, aged 58, Gleadless.
"In the current climate, I don't think we are surprised at any development faltering. The problem with this scheme is that it leaves a lot of loose ends on a landmark city site.
"Not a pretty picture with tracts of unused land...a bit like post-war Sheffield. No doubt conservationists will be relieved that the existing historic buildings will enjoy a longer life."
Barry Cummings, aged 65, Broomhall.
"I am not surprised about this in the current financial climate. It will have a knock-on effect on all the companies involved in this massive project.
"I now worry for the future of Sheffield city centre and what it is going to look like with all the demolition that is happening on the Moor and shops closing down.
"I recently attended a function called Success for All, where we were making pledges to help with the future of our children and what a fantastic city we have in Sheffield.
"I just hope this is not the start of a massive decline in the city."
Kevan Smith, aged 51, Manor.
