YOUR VERDICT: Internet access in prison?

THIS week, The Star revealed thugs from Sheffield gang the Parson Cross Crew jailed for serious knife crimes including murder were updating social networking websites from prison to boast about their activities.

Prison rules forbid use of the internet but they may have had access via smuggled-in mobile phones. Here are the views of our jury panel about the news.

"What I have seen and heard, the prisons should be prisons and not like holiday camps to offenders. It appears it pays to be bad while the good ones who study and become good citizens get no rewards.

"Offenders should have no rights at all and do the time the are given and not half of it."

Ann Lawrenson, aged 60, Firth Park.

"My views are quite straight forward they shouldn't have access to any of the amenities or facilities that people on the outside of prison have usually worked very hard to buy or afford. Prison is meant to be a punishment."

Mollie Hickman, aged 65, Handsworth.

"I think the government have to take a stand on law and order before it gets out of hand though some would say it already is.

"The police these days only seem interested in attending serious crime scenes and issuing speeding tickets.

"I always was led to believe you were put in prison as a punishment or to rehabilitate yourself not have access to the internet, where you can brag about your trophies of crime.

"Perhaps if prisons were a bit more strict people would not seem to be so quick to go back as they seem to do in fact some of them have more gadgets in prison than they do at home."

Milky Bar Kid (not real name).
